Statement
In this exhibition, I chose as my subject matter the natural phenomena that occur in the outside world
and the psychological phenomena that occur in the inner world of human beings.
I sought a new expression as a painter through the contrast between “phenomena” and “phantasms”.
I thought that I would not be able to approach something essential as a painter if I did not also go into the phantasms”.
That’s why I decided to paint “phantasms” creatures.
To me, “phantasms” never represents ugliness or impurity,
but rather an inexplicable yet fascinating force that swirls within the human condition.
This time, I aimed to depict natural phenomena that actually occur in the outside world,
so that the inside and outside phenomena would intersect.
The elements of nature in the Yin-Yang Five Elements theory, such as “wood, fire, earth, metal, and water,” each corresponds to a natural phenomenon, such as wood = wind and fire = flame.
In the series of paintings on F130, dragons and phoenixes are depicted as metaphors for natural phenomena.
Since ancient times, imaginary animals such as dragons and phoenixes have also served as symbols of natural phenomena,
such as water and wind for dragons and fire and sun for phoenixes.
The presence of “phantasms” such as Yamata-no-orochi and Nue, who are often vanquished by heroes,
symbolize man’s attempt to replace chaos with order(logos).
Dragons and phoenixes have been the object of awe and reverence, concentrating the finest elements of living creatures.
These phantasms are the embodiment of chaos.
In other words, it is a representation of unorganized energy in the material and spiritual worlds.
For the painters of the past to depict these beings is to give form to the invisible beings that lurk in the outer world.
It is an act that reflects an inner, indescribable chaos.
These phantasms may have even more symbolism because they are not real, and can be a concentration point for energy.
This exhibition deals with seemingly contradictory subjects, natural and psychological phenomena,
but aims to make them correspond to each other through the paintings.
